Product Description
The Adafruit Metro ESP32-S2 combines Espressif's ESP32-S2 wireless microcontroller with the familiar Arduino Uno–compatible Metro form factor, providing a development platform for engineers who want to leverage existing Arduino shields while taking advantage of integrated Wi-Fi, native USB, and modern embedded software ecosystems. By maintaining compatibility with the Metro and Arduino layout, the board enables migration of many existing Arduino projects to the ESP32-S2 architecture without redesigning expansion hardware, making it suitable for rapid prototyping, educational laboratories, and embedded product development.
Unlike conventional Arduino-compatible boards, the ESP32-S2 provides native USB functionality that supports Human Interface Device (HID) applications including custom keyboards, mice, MIDI controllers, serial interfaces, and other USB peripherals without requiring additional interface hardware. Integrated Wi-Fi connectivity further enables Internet-connected applications such as remote monitoring, cloud-connected sensors, home automation controllers, and wireless instrumentation. Together, these capabilities allow developers to build USB-enabled IoT devices that combine local user interaction with network communication on a single development platform.
Development is supported through multiple software environments including the Arduino IDE, CircuitPython, and Espressif's ESP-IDF, allowing engineers to select a workflow appropriate for rapid prototyping or production-oriented firmware development. The UF2 bootloader simplifies firmware installation, while Adafruit's extensive software libraries and examples reduce development effort for networking, USB peripherals, sensor integration, and display applications./
The integrated STEMMA QT connector provides plug-and-play compatibility with a large ecosystem of I²C sensors, displays, environmental monitors, and input devices, reducing wiring complexity during prototyping. A battery-backed real-time clock enables applications requiring accurate timekeeping during power interruptions, making the Metro ESP32-S2 well suited for data logging, environmental monitoring, automation systems, educational projects, robotics, human-machine interfaces, and connected embedded control systems.
