The term pin/socket refers to the mating side of the connector. In a two part connector system, the round or square profile pin in the male or plug connector wipes against a formed metal contact in the socket connector, completing a circuit. Most socket contacts are single wipe, meaning they make contact on one side of the pin. For high reliability applications, dual wipe contacts may be available.
