The trend is to integrate microprocessor soft or hard cores onto the FPGA and with long product cycles protecting devices from going obsolete, often times FPGA’s are used to emulate parts which have gone or will go obsolete. This often means it may be necessary to change the power supply characteristics after the product is designed to keep up with process geometry changes during the product lifecycle.
