When selecting a meter there are several specifications that should be taken into consideration; Resolution, Digits, Counts, and Accuracy. Resolution refers to how fine a measurement a meter can make. By knowing the resolution of a meter, you can determine if it is possible to see a small change in the measured signal. For example, if the DMM has a resolution of 1mV on the 4V range, it is possible to see a change of 1mV (1/1000 of a volt) while reading 1V. As a general rule, resolution is calculated by dividing the range by the number of counts.
