The advantage of a silicon clock synthesizer is not limited to the higher level of integration over discrete components. Silicon clock synthesizers offer the flexibility of generating many output frequencies from any input frequency at any voltage. Clocks can be turned on or off using an output enable or power-down pin, and frequencies can be changed on the fly. In addition, spread spectrum modulation can be added to any clock to reduce EMI in the system.
