The selectable PFM/PWM mode of operation provides the customer with the ability to choose between optimizing for high efficiency at light loads and output ripple. As seen in the graphs on this slide, these ICs can achieve an essentially flat efficiency curve even at extremely light loads. The ability to operate the part in a “forced PWM mode” also gives the customer the option to disable the PFM mode for ripple and noise sensitive applications, but with the efficiency shown in the upper graph.
