Serial Peripheral Interface, also known as SPI, allows a simplified low pin count solution for interfacing with memory controllers. The compact footprint and decreased pin count over parallel NOR Flash allows smaller solutions and a simplified board layout. Data throughput on SPI flash is increased by utilizing software commands to enable Quad SPI and Quad I/O functionality, or by increasing the clock speed. No costly PCB changes are required.
