The contacts of a Reed Switch open and close depending on the relative orientation of the magnetic field lines with respect to the orientation of the electrical contacts. There are many orientations of a magnet that can be used to actuate a Reed Switch. However, in all cases, the magnetic field lines must be aligned in parallel with the Reed Switch contacts in order for the switch to actuate.
