The PIC24F DA family integrates a hardware Color Lookup Table. This is a separate built-in memory consisting of 256 by 16-bit space per entry. As can be seen from the illustration, the Color Lookup Table converts the indexed color numbers stored in each pixel of frame buffer into physical colors, represented as RGB 565. Since the Color Lookup Table has 256 entries, it allows 256 colors of 16-bit color depth which can appear on the screen simultaneously.
