All M-Series connectors are available in both gender options. This is a design decision at the engineering level and depends on the end use application. Usually females are preferred on the panel / box side to meet UL and other agency requirements. In more rugged applications it may be preferable to have the male on the panel / box side with a female external cable eliminating moisture and contamination build-up at the panel / box.
