A switch mode power supply is a better and more advanced solution. This technology drastically improves efficiency, which eliminates the need for a heat sink. Switching regulators are also more tolerant to high voltage drops and have a longer expected life compared to linear regulators. Many engineers decide to develop their own discrete switching solutions; however, this is often a tricky and time-consuming portion of the design process.
