Depending on the application there are multiple ways to prevent a power surge. Protection methods include: fuses, transient voltage suppressors, overvoltage protection IC’s, and ESD diodes. A simple and cost-effective way to limit surges is to use a series resistor. A resistor placed in series with the IC pin limits the peak current flow into the input or output pin of an IC.
