Using the ADF7xxx family, it is possible to achieve greater than a 3km range line of sight (LOS) without the need for external amplification. This is important for achieving range in difficult radio environments, such as communication from an underground water-pit to a meter reader. As can be seen here, the other standards support shorter ranges, and in some cases, higher data rates.
