Electric double-layer capacitors (EDLC), also known as supercapacitors or ultracapacitors, are symmetric devices containing activated carbon electrodes and an electrolyte between them with both positive and negative ions. In this device, charging and discharging are both electrostatic processes with no chemical reactions. As a result, their cycle life is practically unlimited, and the voltage drops linearly under constant current during discharge.
