This study was conducted in the US by the National Electoral Manufacturers Association (NEMA), and the statistics are similar internationally. When people think of surge protection, the first thing that comes to mind is lightning protection. However, based on the study, 60 to 80% of surges come from within a facility, and lightning only accounts for about 22% of surges.
