The DAC and driver design approach uses a configurable output driver IC along with a lower voltage DAC. This allows the same output capabilities in terms of signal ranges and diagnostics regardless of the DAC used, whether it be discrete or integrated. Designers can still take advantage of the integration benefits with DACs and pick the resolution needed for the application. This is the middle ground approach that balances component count and flexibility.
