The series connection shown here on the left is an Amp test. This is an inside look at the current passing though the circuit. The parallel connection is contrasted to the right; this is a look at voltage testing. This voltage example shows the circuit, but is looking on the outside of the circuit. This is a critical basic factor to understand in order to be able to use a meter effectively.
