Slotted switches are used for sensing the presence and/or position of an object. As an opaque object blocks the light from the LED, the sensor changes state allowing the following electronics to recognize the action. Blocking the light is considered a non-contact acknowledgement; therefore optical switches, unlike mechanical switches, never experience contact degradation. This allows millions of operations with no change to the switching position.
