By adjusting the forward current of the emitter (LED) the performance of a slotted switch can be enhanced.  Higher forward currents give more light thus increases the Ic (on) current. Note that the ambient temperature that the device is operating in also affects output current. Higher temperatures will lower the output current, thus environmental conditions may need to be taken into consideration during the circuit design.
