The safety feature of the PTCEL is the exponential change in resistance with small change in temperature once temperature passes the switch temperature. If there is a short-circuit failure, the internal I2R losses will cause the PTC to heat up to high resistance quickly. The result is a very small residual current. The PTC will remain at high resistance until the energy source is removed and the PTC cools down below the tripping temperature.
