Ambient light sensors detect and measure the level of ambient light. The output of the sensor is typically fed to a controller which then initiates an action. For example, as day turns to dusk, street lights with ambient light sensors will automatically turn on. In consumer electronics, most notebook PCs will automatically adjust the displays backlight intensity optimizing the visibility and conserving battery power. Any device with an LCD display is a candidate for an ambient light sensor.
