The -48V system uses a low side main switch so the hot swap controller resides on the -48V rail. Due to the nature of the -48V system, high voltage transients can often occur. This is why the ADM1073 is powered through a dropper resistor and uses a shunt regulator on chip. This helps protect the device from these high voltage transients, offering a very robust solution.
