The thin film process has been used in microwave applications for many years. In this process, a 2D conductive spiral structure is laid out on the substrate to create an inductor. This makes the inductors miniaturized and able to operate at high frequencies. In addition, this design and manufacturing process allows for precision inductance values, even at low (nH) nanohenry ranges.
