The heat pipe can only function if the condensate returns to the evaporator in a timely manner. In order for this function to happen the wick structure must be placed on the walls of the heat pipe. The wick allows the liquid to return from the condenser to the evaporator through the capillary pressure caused by the difference in curvature of the liquid menisci.
