The Over Current Detection feature allows for both positive and negative current. It has 16 programmable levels ranging from 0.6 times to 5.8 times nominal current. The typical factory setting is 2.5 times nominal current. This allows for better control by excluding the protection requirement from the dynamic range. This allows the control loop more resolution and better signal to noise ratio.
