The VBAT battery back up is featured on the PIC24FJ128GA310 family. This enables automatic switch over upon loss of VDD and maintains RTCC and 2 x 16-bit registers. With the VBAT functionality, the RTCC on the device can maintain the time with 400nA. This module is powered separately from 1.8 - 3.6V source.
