When the current is stable, due to a chopping technique, the circuit will increase and decrease the energy/current in the coil at a high frequency. Each time the current decreases, it also applies a decay. Depending on the current level and the amplitude from one step to the next, all the timings will be different, explaining the complexity in the design of a stepper motor.
