Outputs are completely protected from over current events. Shorted load, shorted battery, and short to ground are all protected. Overcurrent protection helps reduce system damage from harness shorts or a damaged motor. In addition, overcurrent protection prevents damage to the PCB or other components when a solder ball or shorted lead defect results from the manufacturing process.
