Shown here is a simplified block diagram of a 4-wire, 4mA - 20mA loop-powered sensor transmitter configuration. In a 4-wire application, power and ground are carried on separate wires from the communications. While more expensive than the 2-wire version, there is no power constraint for the remote sensor or actuator. The MAX12900 can fit this application as well as a 3-wire application.
